About

Eleven years of product design, most of it spent on software where the stakes are quietly high.

A short version

I have been designing software for eleven years, most of it on products where the stakes are quietly high — money moving, health being tracked, someone doing their job for the ninth hour. That work taught me to care less about how a screen looks in a portfolio and more about how it behaves at 4pm on a bad Tuesday.

I started at Sundial as the first designer, spent four years at Overtone on consumer apps, then led payments design at Harbor through the years it grew from a startup to an institution. Since 2019 I have worked independently, usually embedded with one team at a time.

I write here when something is worth thinking through properly. I read a great deal about how things are built — bridges and books as much as software — and most of what I believe about interfaces I stole from other disciplines.

Where I have worked

  • 2019 — now

Independent product designer — Own practice

Product and systems work for teams from seed stage to public.

  • 2016 — 2019

    Design lead, Payments — Harbor

Built the design team from two to nine and shipped the merchant platform.

  • 2014 — 2016

    Senior product designer — Overtone

Consumer audio apps across iOS, Android, and the web.

  • 2012 — 2014

    Product designer — Sundial

First design hire. Learned most of this the hard way.

If you have a product that is nearly right and stuck, or a blank page and a deadline, I would like to hear about it. A first call is thirty minutes and costs nothing.
